Neil Howe Neil Howe is an author, historian, economist, and demographer who received graduate degrees in economics and history from Yale University. His current titles include: Founding Partner of LifeCourse Associates, Senior Advisor on Public Policy to the Blackstone Group, and Senior Advisor to the Concord Coalition. Mr. Howe has spoken and written extensively on the collective personalities of today’s generations — who they are, what motivates them, and how they will shape America’s future. He has coauthored several books, including On Borrowed Time in 1988; and (with William Strauss) Generations in 1991; 13th-GEN in 1993; The Fourth Turning in 1997; and Millennials Rising in 2000. Bill Clinton, Newt Gingrich, Al Gore, and Rush Limbaugh are all fans of Generations — a book Newsweek has called “a provocative, erudite, and engaging analysis of the rhythms of American life.” 13th-Gen remains the best-selling nonfiction book ever written about Generation X. And of The Fourth Turning, Dan Yankelovich said, “Immensely stimulating… We will never be able to think about history in the same way.” The Boston Globe wrote, “If Howe and Strauss are right, they will take their place among the great American prophets.”
William Strauss has been a leading authority on American generations—and a noted playwright, theater director, entertainer, and speaker for the past two decades. Along with co-author Neil Howe, Mr. Strauss has written four books, all best sellers widely used by businesses, colleges, government agencies, and political leaders of both parties. Their first book, Generations, is a history of America told as a sequence of generational biographies. Vice President Gore sent a copy to every Member of Congress, calling it, “the most stimulating book on American history I have ever read.” Mr. Strauss’ second book with Mr. Howe, 13th-Gen, remains the top selling nonfiction book on Generation X. The Fourth Turning forecasts a major mood change in America shortly after the new millennium—a change much like what actually happened after September 11, 2001. The Fourth Turning reached as high as #10 on the amazon.com list, and its Web site fourthturning.com has the Internet’s longest-running discussion forum for any nonfiction book. The most recent Strauss-Howe book, Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation, has been widely quoted in the media, for leading the argument that today’s teens and kids are new, very post Generation-X, and, on the whole, doing better than most adults think. Mr. Strauss has advised numerous public and private organizations
Mr. Strauss is the cofounder and director of Capitol Steps, has written three musicals, and runs a national theatre program, The Cappies, for high school students. A native of San Francisco, Mr. Strauss is a graduate of Harvard College (1969), Harvard Law School (1973), and the Kennedy School of Government (1973).
